Book Quota

If I’ve done my math right, I have to read 17 books this month to catch up to last year. That’s the bad news. The good news is that I’ve already read 10 this month(!). So that leaves 7 books in 18 days. That’s not too bad.

Except… last year I apparently went a bit crazy in December! I could lose it all then if I don’t get ahead now.

What did you think of The Language Police?

I didn’t entirely agree with everything she said, though it was pretty troublesome.

(I didn’t know it when I read it, but Ravitch is a Wellesley alum.)

Well, it’s important to realize she pretty much completely left out fiction and nonfiction kids are reading. They got like passing mention, and she didn’t seem too keen on the fiction in particular. Maybe the textbooks are whitewashed, but there’s lots of good stuff in the fiction and nonfiction.

American textbooks suck anyway compared to Japanese ones. Their books are so cute! You can easily read them on the bus or walking and you don’t have to break your back carrying them around.
