His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik

I read a review of this book/series in F&SF and decided to check it out. Literally. I put a hold on it at the library and it finally came back in the end of last month. Jun said she'd mentioned this book before, though I hadn't remembered her doing so. I grepped, and it turned out she definitely did. And I said it sounded interesting.

Patrick O'Brien.. Patrick O'Brian? How does he spell his name? Google isn't much help, though it leans towards A. Oh, anyway, him with dragons. Or Hornblower goes to Pern. Anyway, it's pretty cool. I recommend it to people who like the British Navy, historical novels, and dragons.

More spoily details after my first ever use of the cut tag!

It was a relatively quick read, and interesting. However, it did feel a bit lacking. There wasn't a whole lot of interesting character stuff. The main character didn't do fun Hornblower or Kirk stuff. I guess I wanted either deeper character intereactions or angst, some slashiness, or some really intelligent rogue captain-y things. Just one of those things would've made it better. Of course all of the above and then it'd be Lois McMaster Bujold or David Feintuch. And be truly excellent.

Still worth trying to purchase copies of my own of all three.

Hee, I didn't expect you to actually grep for it, but thanks for the credit. :) I'll read the rest of this entry someday after I've read them myself.
