Doctor Who: Conundrum, by Steve Lyons

K leant me a couple of Doctor Who books after I expressed interest in reading some. Well, if this one is any example, I needn’t have bothered. Media tie-ins are like pot luck when you’re vegan and allergic to vegetables. If there’s something edible there, good luck finding it.

More after the break. Mild spoilers.

The book had a whole lot of characters. Only one of which I knew, and not very well, as it was the seventh Doctor. I haven’t seen him in action. He had two companions with him, one of whom isn’t listed in Wikipedia. And then the town they arrived in was populated by all sorts of people. The scenes and viewpoints kept shifting so it was incredibly difficult to keep track. If I’d really cared to keep track, as I didn’t care about any of them.

There were times it tried to be funny and almost managed it. Including a ‘real McCoy’ joke.

And sort of the ultimate ‘author writing himself into the story’.

Mostly though, the tone was just off. Wikipedia says the seventh Doctor got a bit dark, so that might explain it. Don’t blame him with the whack job companions he was hanging out with.

So I think if I read another, it’ll be a different author and a different Doctor.
