I'll bust your block

Posted in Geeky Stuff, Movies, SF/F, TV at 8:40 pm by Jellyn

Where do you get off calling the Incredible Hulk movie a 'blockbuster' before it's even hit theatres?

I have no intentions of seeing it. Hellboy II looked somewhat interesting, but still isn't something I'd go out of my way to see. The Batman movie looked dark and creepy -- yea yea, purists will love it for that, but it doesn't incline me to go see it. I would still like to see Hancock, but it may wait for DVD. Ditto Iron Man. Except.. wait... Hancock isn't out yet? I totally had the impression it had been out at least as long as Iron Man.... In that case, maybe I will still go see it. I shouldn't known a Will Smith movie was a July 4th movie.

Hrm.. I thought there was one more superhero movie coming out. But it wasn't the Punisher movie in December.

I don't think it was Wanted either that I was thinking of.

At any rate, give me another Spiderman, I'll be happy. Give me another Xmen, I'll be optimistic. Give me Wonder Woman and I'll be.. interested. Give me one of those gay superheroes and I'll watch it no matter how horrible it's reported to be.

In other news: "Charlie Jade" is a total snorer. Though kudos to Sci-Fi Channel for bringing us a Canadian/South African show I hadn't heard of. It's just that I hate hard-boiled detective narrators. :P

Tuesday's Watching Part Only

Posted in Books, Geeky Stuff, Movies, TV at 12:04 pm by Jellyn

Brainiac Science Abuse series 6, episode 9. I'll take this opportunity to say I don't like Vic Reeves' characters. The gasbangwallop thing and the Russian guy. They talk slowly, they're rather offputting, and their segments are pretty boring anyway. Just blowing things up or setting them on fire.

Biggest Loser Couples episode whatever. This was the makeover episode, so was overall pretty boring. Makes one rethink the strategy for winning though. Don't reach your ideal weight before the show ends or you'll lose.

The Jane Austen Book Club. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish watching this. Good movie and makes me want to read the book. Though I probably would've eventually anyway! It even almost makes me want to read Jane Austen. But don't hold your breath on that one.

Monday's Watching Part I

Posted in Geeky Stuff, Gender, Movies, TV at 5:36 pm by Jellyn

It seems the universe has decided I need more to watch. While at work today, one of the ladies at circulation had just checked in a movie and asked if I'd seen it. It was "The Jane Austen Book Club", which was based on a book by Karen Joy Fowler. I admit I have not read the book (yet) and I also have read little (more likely none) of Jane Austen. But I was assured I'd like it anyway. It had been on my library list already anyway, so I definitely checked it out then and there. It's a hot copy, so I couldn't have put a hold on it.

Then about an hour later, the same situation occurs, but in another location with another person! This time it was Dan in Real Life, which gets bolded, because I watched it already. "The Office" is only so-so, but Steve Carrell is good. The movie wasn't really my sort of movie, but it was pretty good.

Plus two DVDs I had on hold came in, so I came home today with a lot of stuff to watch.

Brainiac Science Abuse Series 6, Episode 8. Those of you lucky enough to have that cool video game-ish channel.. is it E4 or something like that?.. will recognize this show. It's another British show, reminiscent of Mythbusters. The earlier seasons were better. It's gotten more gross and more blowing-up-stuff and more sexist and more innuendoish. In other words, it's moved further away from my demographic. But it's still interesting, so I still watch. I do worry that Jon Tickle, who's an awesome presenter and a science buff and, in short, a geek, is being made to seem this season and last like someone sub-ordinate to the other presenter and someone to be made fun of for his smarts. (And I could mention how Tickle got his start as a house guest on Big Brother, but I won't. -- Whoops.)

And I have a full night of TV viewing lined up starting at 7, so the rest of the stuff on my computer and the other DVDs will have to wait.

Saturday's Watching Part II

Posted in Geeky Stuff, Movies, SF/F at 3:09 pm by Jellyn

I watched The Martian Child on DVD. It's based on, well they called it a short story, but I found it called a novelette elsewhere, by David Gerrold. And then I found a novel of the same name, so they've all just confused me. Anyway the story is in turn rather autobiographical. Science fiction writer adopts a weird kid who thinks he's from Mars. It's pretty good. I will probably write a review for Epinions, so I won't go into detail here. I mean to dig up the story, in whatever form it's most readily available, and give it a read.

Here's an essay about the movie that I just found on the Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy site.

Harry Potter: Alere Flammas MUSH Sorting Tonight!

Posted in Books, Geeky Stuff, Movies, SF/F at 12:06 pm by Jellyn

Hey, if you're quick and you like reading information files, you still have time to create a first year student to get Sorted tonight! The Hogwarts Express arrives at 8pm Eastern and the Sorting Feast itself starts at 9.

If you just want to log in as a Guest or a new character to watch from the OOC rooms, that's fine too.

You can create a new character at Alere Flammas at any time, not just before the Sorting. You can make a student of any year, an adult in whatever profession you choose, a house elf, a ghost, a portrait, or more.

There's Feature characters available as well, including a number of Weasleys, Neville, Luna, Kingsley, and other cool ones. New players are more than welcome to apply for any open Feature character, with the caveat that to be a Professor, you first have to have a student character.

AF started where Goblet of Fire (book 4) left off and continued the story from there, so Harry is a happily-married Auror now, Snape is Headmaster of Hogwarts, Sirius is happily-married Minister of Magic, and none of them has managed to destroy Great Britain yet. (Snape was happily-married awhile ago, but then he killed his Death Eater wife. Sucks to be Snape.)

Anyway, the website is at http://www.alereflammas.org

Or you can log into the game at: alereflammas.org 9034 (216.93.240.98 9034)

Harry Potter Movie & My Theory Again

Posted in Books, Geeky Stuff, Movies, SF/F at 1:23 pm by Jellyn

I liked movie 5 better than book 5 and I think it's worth seeing, on the big screen if you can manage it.

Below the cut are spoilers for the movie and a bit more about my theory espoused in the previous entry. So potential spoilers for book 7! Because my theory is sooo right.

Novik and Jackson Combine!

Posted in Books, Geeky Stuff, Movies, SF/F at 9:49 pm by Jellyn

We interrupt your regularly scheduled (if delayed) Albacon posts to bring you this news link.

Peter Jackson's doing the Naomi Novik trilogy with the ships and the dragons. Bound to be a hit. Not news to some of you, but the article has a picture of her. And she's self-described as a geek and fangirl.

I Own You, Wookiee!

Posted in Geeky Stuff, Movies, SF/F at 10:03 pm by Jellyn

There's a new commercial for Star Wars DVDs. Why these are different from earlier Star Wars DVDs, I don't know. And I don't care. What I want to comment on is the little girl who says, all cutely of course, that she wants a Wookiee as a pet.

Excuse me? A pet? Wookiees are a sentient race with their own civilization and culture. You cannot have one as a pet!

Where did this idea come from? Did this girl get the impression that Chewbacca was Han Solo's pet? Or perhaps a step higher, slave? But he can't be a slave, because he's too cute and you can't understand what he's saying. So clearly he's a pet instead. Not even a slave.

Is this the reaction our species is going to have when we make contact with aliens? If they're cute, then they'll be our pets?

At least the girl had the brains to pick the Wookiee over the Ewok. If you're going to have a pet, might as well have one that can beat up your big brother for you.

More, what's it say that they let this part into the commercial? Why did no one contradict this little girl's idea of keeping a sentient being as a pet?
