Here's an article on fan productions of Star Trek.
'Star Trek' Fans, Deprived of a Show, Recreate the Franchise on Digital Video
Silly me for thinking New Voyages was the only one. I guess it initially got my attention from being filmed in Ticonderoga, NY. Though notably, they seem to have pulled in the most 'star' guest actors and writers. Anyway, from this article, Hidden Frontier sounds the most interesting.
I shall be checking it out. Though they don't seem to have a torrent version. How can you be so geeky and techy as to film your own Trek episodes and yet not have them up as torrents? Okay, I take it back.. the newest eps seem to have torrents. Not that this helps me.. of course I'd start at the beginning!

I think I'm going to go through and read all the Tiptree Award winners. Then of course I'd have to buy the anthologies. But I think I'll start with the ones I actually own already, then see what the libraries have. The only question is.. should I reread ones I've already read? There's a couple. Then there's a couple that I know I've looked up before, perhaps borrowed from the library, perhaps even started, but I don't know if I finished them. Or if I own them.

Okay, now this title struck me as really cool and worth investigating.
Midshipwizard Halcyon Blithe
More the dude(?)'s title than his name.
So I clicked on it and what's the first word in the description? 'Hogwarts'.
Okay, so my estimation of the book was going down fast after that. But I kept reading.. "...Setting off from the land of Arcania, 12- and 13-year-old aspiring wizards learn how to sail a vessel"
And that's when I stopped to post this blog entry. Before I'd even gotten to the next part of that sentence "affixed to the back of a huge sea-dragon and to battle the nasty shape-changers of the enemy Maleen."
Duuuuuude. Now I don't know if I need to avoid this like the plague, or actually check it out. Let me guess.. are there a) twins, b) a cat, c) a unicorn, d) pirates, arrr!, e) uh.. something resembling Houses, or f) mermen?
Place your bets now!
(Sorry, don't have cut tags on here, or I'd employ them.)
Okay, so I don't see any mention of any of those things.. (not even the pirates and mermen!) But there is swordfighting!
If I actually buy the silly thing, I'll let you know!

Just saw that they're bundling Tanya Huff's Blood books into 2-book collections. For only $7.99 too, so not bad. So if you're into Tanya Huff, vampires, detectives, or uh... comic urban fantasy.. or like, you know, Buffy, you should check 'em out. The Blood Books, Vol 1., Vol. 2 and Vol 3. Due out July 5th, August 1st, and September 5th. Looks like Volume 3 has short stories, including a new one. So I guess I'll have to get that one.

In contrast to my previous post, Kudos to whoever did the Bertucci's commercials.
You can't transmit smell over the airwaves yet (hey, if you could, would they be more literal airwaves?). But the people doing the Bertucci's commercials realize that sight is not their only medium. The pictures look pretty good with the fire and the food with no distracting stories or cheap jokes to get in the way. But what makes the commercials really work is the sound.
I'm usually not watching the TV. Commercials only catch my attention if the sound is unusual -- such as 1) annoying 2) cool 3) intriguing or 4) nonexistent.
1) pulls me out of whatever I was concentrating on and ticks me off. Sometimes I'll mute. 2) might get me to look up, such as the TMBG/Dunkin Donut commercials. 3) will get me to look up to find out what's going on. 4) will get me to look up, probably because I know I'm missing stuff, or maybe because I subconsciously think there's something wrong with the TV or transmission.
Anyway, I suppose the Bertucci's commercials are 2) and 3). They get me to look up and even after I have, it's still the sound that's really doing it for me. The crackling fire and sizzling food is just perfect.
That is how you convey that your food is good and people should go to your restaurant. Not with singing dead rodents and creepy costumed guys.

I used to like Burger King.
Their whoppers are pretty good without meat, especially with cheese and without onions. Their fries are vegetarian (as far as I know) whereas McDonalds' ones are not. They've even offered veggie burgers, though I never have tried one from there.
So why did they have to go and ruin a perfectly good food experience with their commercials?
I. Hate. Burger King. Commercials.
First it started with that bizarre guy in the King suit. What was up with that? It was creepy. Then they started putting him everywhere. He didn't improve! Then there was some song and dance number with farm girls and sexual innuendo (and downright obvious sexual stuff). Hello... that might be appropriate for Spike, but don't put it everywhere.
Then they did a Big Buckin' Chicken commercial. This bothered me nearly as much as the King commercials did. Then I realized what the B was standing in for. This just turned me off completely. Not that I'd eat your chicken anyway, but do you need to swear at me?
As if that wasn't enough, they moved on to Big Huckin' Chicken. I had no idea what hucking was, so I looked it up. Okay, so I still don't know what it is exactly, but it's related to bike stunts, so I assume the chicken is doing it, whatever it is.
Join me in boycotting Burger King and its Big Suckin' Chicken!

I was trying to find which schools teach Klingon or have taught Klingon as a class. Google was not helpful at all. So if anyone knows of any, preferably in the US, please drop me a comment.
Oh, or any other geeky and slightly unusual class or degree!

I'm not a huge gamer, so the first I heard of this was a couple of days ago on Daily Show, or Colbert Report. One or the other.
Spore
It's like the coolest game ever. It's the game that someone should've made 10 years ago when I wanted a game like this. And it really sucks that it won't be out for months and months!
I want this more than I want a PS3. Just hope it doesn't cost as much!

I only just now found out that the CW (Creative Writing?) has an Aquaman pilot, called Mercy Reef, but have decided not to go ahead with it. Found out from geek-week.net, which Jun pointed me too because of their Joss Whedon interview. Which, btw, is too heavily comic book. Should be comic-book-geek-week. With 'week' in quotes. Anyway, where was I?
Oh yea, there's a trailer here. I found it on the list of links over on the right there.
It's from the creators of Smallville, but doesn't use the same actor as the Aquaman episode of Smallville. It could be interesting, except for the whole 'hot young people in swimsuits' aspect, which the CW (Cat Whiskers?) should love. It's named after a place, which the CW (Cranberry Wine?) should also love.
I can't be too sad about its fate, but I would've liked to give it a chance.
Now we'll never get to see boats destroyed every week.
