Holmes and Watson, sitting in a tree - 3:52PM, 2003/01/28

Ahh! I did happen to catch the end of Hound of the Baskervilles last weekend. And after seeing the end, I was sad that I hadn’t been able to see the whole thing. I came in after Watson was injured, saw him rescue Holmes, saw Holmes ask him out on a date, and then, the end. Sigh.

Then followed the random little production special snippet, where Watson’s actor said: (And I paraphrase, but I do not put words in his mouth) “They play to each others’ strengths and weaknesses. They’re complementary. Like when people fall in love.”

(I was sorry to have missed the rest of it for more than just the ghei. I had been intending to watch it, having seen ads for it at the end of _Wives and Daughters_ but then I forgot. Bugger.)

Cel! - 3:35PM, 2003/01/28

*bounce* My cel came! I’m so excited. I’ve been looking for Miracle Girls cels off and on for about 5 years. For a series with 51 episodes, there aren’t a heck of a lot around. It’s a bit odd… but it’s just my luck that I would be looking for a show were the studio didn’t release the cels, or a character who hardly ever shows up (ie, Takeshi and Kentarou). Of course, after I finally saw this auction (the very first Miracle Girls cel I’d ever seen), this past weekend I found one for a set of 4. They were good, too. Unfortunately they went for 34,000 yen which is a little too pricey for me. ^^;;

We have also purchased Vitaballs, aka vitamin gum. I think this is such a cool idea. The verdict so far: not bad. It’s not the best gum ever, but it doesn’t taste mediciney, or worse, like Flintstones chewables.

Mutants - 4:43PM, 2003/01/24

It’s official. The X-men are not human.

A couple of tales from school:

In Theory of Computation class, Prof C. was attempting to give a short example of a state transition function. So she gave her example as a door. “It has a sensor pad in front of it, and so if you stand on the pad it opens, if you get off the pad it closes. If you’re on the pad already, it stays open, if you’re off the pad it stays closed.” Then she wrote it out, adding, “This is obviously not a very good door, because if it closed too fast, it might close in your face.”

Now, this was clearly an aside: the example wasn’t meant to be realistic, it was meant to illustrate a simple point.

So then the class spent the next 10 minutes making suggestions on how to improve the door.
“What if we put a pad on the other side?”
“Maybe it’s a sliding door.”
“There could be some kind of delay.”
“Is it a one way door?”

Prof C: Oh my /god/. I’ve taught this class a lot of times before, but it’s always been to mathematicians, never to engineers.

In Japanese class, we were doing yes/no questions. (Again. I don’t think I’ve had any new grammar this year at all… that’s beside the point, though.) Sensei held up a picture of a young Asian woman in a yellow sundress, and asked “Nihonjin desu ka?” We were all supposed to reply along the lines of ‘it might be’ or ‘could be, but it might not’. Except this one guy studied the picture and then suggested “Otokonoko deshou.”

During lunch I was reading my Japanese textbook, and under the “other words/phrases you should already know but we’ll repeat them anyway” section of the vocab, I discovered this phrase:

q

K: *blinks*

q

K: It really says that. *choke*

Acquisitions - 7:25PM, 2003/01/15

Tokyopop continues their rampage. They have now acquired Gravitation and Fake manga.

I was all set for today to be kind of blah, as classes started up again, but I woke up to good news.
Posted it to AF and ran off to class. But now I’m back, with newly chopped hair.

[Comment: Dammit! I had a post written out and then the stupid keyboard highlighted it and deleted the bloody thing.]

How am I supposed to wait 6 months though?! Augh!

In other news, my replacement KOR discs came from AnimEigo yesterday. As one who is fanatical about OP and ED, it will be nice to be able to watch the show without going into spastic fits because the episodes are running into one another. I need that downtime! To think, to recharge — I seriously doubt I would have enjoyed Fushigi Yuugi as much without the OP. That boom right at the beginning with the lightning… it just brought my attention right back to the show and partially negated my intense feelings of hatred toward the stupidity of Miaka and Tamahome and their incessant ANGST. (Which is interesting, as I later chose to play a version of Tamahome on a game, and I ended up liking him quite a lot. But he got much more interesting and un-shallow after his Miaka died.) Anyhow, I guess KOR will be next up to bat after I finish Miyu TV, which I started after finishing off the lovely set of Jeeves and Wooster I got for Christmas. (My mom rules, btw.) Miyu is a very depressing show. And that’s really all I have to say about it.

Then, of course, there’s Level C, which just arrived today…

No Follow Through - 4:29PM, 2003/01/13

Hmm. No posts for a while.

Not sure why. I guess I just haven’t felt like it. I did log in a while ago with the intentions of doing so, but didn’t quite follow through.

My half-vacation is nearly over. I don’t want to start school again. Mainly, I don’t want to start while I’m still working. We have to move soon, so I can quit. It’s just no good, not when they want me to be a TA-who’s-not-really-a-TA.

Observations:
The ads for that new movie _A Guy Thing_ have intrigued me. The first round of ads were all pretty much the same, and summarized what I understood to be the plot of the movie: The Guy, who is about to get married, has a crisis when he finds himself attracted to this exciting blonde chick who is unlike his boring fiance. Hilarity ensues. But suddenly all of those ads seem to be gone, replaced by ads which don’t mention the fiance — or The Guy’s impending marriage — at all. Instead, he is now a hero, rescuing the lovely maiden from her psycho-ex. WTF?!

Happy New Year! - 12:02AM, 2003/01/01

Sims Online Ads:
Let’s be realistic here, folks. The girls on that game? Sure, some of them are girls. The guys on that game? Sure, some of them are guys. But I want to see a commercial where those people have just got married and they both turn out to be guys. Or both girls. Or as J suggested, one of them is actually a cat. Or perhaps grandma.
And another thing. The Sims are not REAL. Good lord. How long do you think it’ll be before the first lawsuit?

PsychoA: But but… I really am married to her! They said it was real!
Jury: We saw the ad too. We award you damages in the amount of $500,000,000,000.
