Tired - 6:55PM, 2004/09/24

Going back to work has been surprisingly rough. I don’t remember it being this difficult the last time I went back after a long gap, but then, there were other things going on at that time to absorb my attention and make the transition from lazing around the house all day to 90 minute one way commute less of a shock to my system.

This time, there was little going on other than the need to get a job and earn some money.

So as a result, I’ve been tired and dragging, but I think things are on the upswing: I’m less tired tonight than I was last Friday.

ObLinks:
Hikarunix: Just what it sounds like (to the well-informed otaku) — unix for playing Go. It’s kind of cool sounding.
Terra Nova: A blog about virtual communities. Seems to be from an academic sociological perspective mostly, which I found pretty interesting.

Traffic - 9:24AM, 2004/09/08

As is obvious, I’m starting to remember why I was so happy to stop working at the beginning of last summer. And why I was so cautious about my class schedule, making sure that it never required me to drive during rush hours in either direction.

I’m going to need to start getting up super early. I didn’t really want to do it because it’s unnatural for me, but I guess there’s not much choice. Wasting more than an hour to go 20 miles is just not a reasonable choice.

snarl - 9:20AM, 2004/09/08

Things I hate include…

…police cars that park along the side of the road during rush hour with their lights flashing, causing the commuters already travelling at the rate of 2cm/h to slow even further.

…states that ignore the problem of traffic until the roads become completely unpassable for several hours a day, and then take another decade to actually address the issue.

…road construction that runs years behind schedule.

…route 3.

Grr.

It’s a small world after all - 3:24AM, 2004/09/01

Through the magic of the internet, I ended up at The Underwear Drawer, and was looking at the collection of comics which she had drawn about medical school. The name of the artist was nagging at me — it sounded so familiar. And now I think that the style of the comics must have been as well.

The About me page cleared up the mystery: she was at Wellesley when I was, and that was enough for me to remember MAu’s Moments (I think that was the title) in the Wellesley News. That was a great strip. It’s a pity she doesn’t have them on the web.

I’m considering buying the collection.

tivotivotivo - 3:21AM, 2004/09/01

I have been lusting after this box for the past year. Last August, though, after Bob got laid off, I decided we couldn’t get it until he got a new job. And though he’s been working again since March, it’s not been what either of us consider a ‘real’ job, and so… no tivo.

But now that I’m going back to my old job for a while, and also because the price has come down from about $1000 to $450, we ordered it, and it’s now on its way. Yay. I’m so excited. New toy!
